Put in at Shell Island early yesterday planning to troll most of the morning and come in to fish both sides of the high tide midday..Well, trolling didn't amount to much..One black bass on a stretch 25 in about 22 ft of water.. Saw some fish on bottom machine but no strikes.. Just plenty of grass down deep. Constantly reeling in to clear stretches. not much grass floating at all. Got back in about 11:30 to the east flats and pretty much enough water to go where you wanted to.
Started out with a SWA under a cajun thunder. Fish were hitting soon as it hit the water. Got a nice keeper pretty quick so decided to try topwater plug as I did well with them in the same area couple weeks ago..
For the next couple hours I caught more keeper trout than I ever have in a day. I had what was probably the heaviest five fish limit I ever caught and must have thrown back 25 nice keeper fish including a couple over 20 inches.Every one of these on topwater plugs. I started changing plugs to see what all they would hit and they hit em all..
I was throwing a chrome she dog when something boiled at it and missed.. looked like a big cobia or something like that. I let it rest and then twitched it again. It boiled again and took it.. Turned out to be a dang turtle big as a washtub. Took forever to get it to the boat to get the lure unhooked. All the time he was snapping at my pliers. Glad I had long needlenoses..
Around 2:30 I went back out to 15' and started trolling a stretch 12 and a cisco kid.. again nothing.. Finally gave up and went up next to the rock garden and caught shorts till around 5.. almost stayed to late. water left there in a hurry yesterday afternoon.
This morning got back out on the flats around 8 and started fishing. It was glass smooth and nothing much was happening. Caught a couple shorts and that was it till about 10. Then the wind picked up pretty good. I ran in close as the water was rising fast and went back to the topwaters. In just a little bit had another heavy limit. Biggest nearly 23". Kept on fishing and
again threw back several nice fish in the 17-19" slot..Lett around 11:30 with em still hitting..
Never had two days where things lined up like they did this trip.
