Jacksonville Fishing Forecast
Best Bet
Another windy weekend will keep anglers inshore. A cold front will push in tonight, and the weekend forecast calls for 20-knot northeast winds, seas 6 to 9 feet and choppy inland waters. That means the only really fishable areas will be the smaller creeks running more east and west.
Saltwater
Inshore north of the St. Johns River: The hottest bite has been bluefish and trout in the surf on the south end of Amelia Island. Trout also have been caught in Landsford Creek and other feeder creeks in the area. Pompey drum are hitting in the holes, creekmouths and off the pier this week.
Inshore south of the St. Johns River: Inshore fishing has been good for trout, pompey drum and redfish. Reds are small. Big flounder have been caught off the south jetties at St. Augustine Inlet, and trout are a good bet at night under the dock lights along the Intracoastal. Big blues are in the surf, especially on North Beach and South Ponte Vedra.
St. Johns River mouth and vicinity: Flounder have hit well on the dock and rocks near the inlet. Pompano fishing in the surf has been excellent. Sheepshead have been caught under the Beach Boulevard bridge. Trout fishing has been excellent.
Offshore Fernandina: Most snapper and grouper remain undersized, but some sow snapper were caught 12 miles off. Weather will close down fishing through the weekend.
Offshore Mayport: Some good reports of wahoo came in when the weather allowed. Otherwise, small grouper and snapper with black sea bass and beeliners.
Offshore St. Augustine: Same thing: small snapper and grouper and a mixed bag of triggerfish and beeliners.
Freshwater
St. Johns River south to Green Cove Springs: Doctors Lake is giving up some bream and small speckled perch. Falling water temperatures were stalled by warm weather all week. That also should stall the first of the schooling bass. Black mullet are running north and are carrying small roe.
Green Cove Springs to Palatka: A few reds are taJaken near the Shands Bridge, an area that continues to produce shrimp. The numbers are fewer, but the size is big. Speckled perch fishing in Trout and Six-Mile Creek is picking up. Croakers are thick in the deeper holes.
Lake George area: Marinas report things are slow, other than a few bream and warmouth. Blind mosquitoes have covered the area for the past two weeks. Some think that fish are feeding on them and hitting little else. Shrimping continues to be good in the deeper parts of Dunn's Creek. Ten to 15 a throw is the take, with good size.
Area lakes: Warm weather continues to hold off the upswing in fishing that everyone's hoping for now. A few speckled perch are being caught in both Orange Lake and Lochloosa. Minnow and jig combos are the best bet.
Rodman Reservoir area: A few small bass are being taken early and late, along with scattered panfish.
Elsewhere: Pompano at Hanna Park have picked up well. Ponds still hold panfish and small catfish.
