There is a rumor going around town that Florida is going to lower the limit of speckled trout from the current 5 per person to 1....started by a report by Jack Wingate in his weekly article in the Mailbox of the week of 13Nov06.
Anyone else heard anything like this?

We would have had a CCA alert if that were the case.

Yes it true , The FWC makes its call on the available fish stocks . FWC research shows the decline in fish stocks then they impose rule changes to sustain that stock. What is over looked in the research however is the largest contibutor to the fish stocks decline. THE ENVIRONMENT WE HAVE CREATED !!!!!!!!!!!!! until we have this in check we will never be able to support a fish population. Every year from now until forever you will see a decline in fish stocks and in return more restrictions on your fishing habits. What can we do ??

Do as other states have done, improve the environment and look at restocking, Texas set the standard on trout restocking...Until we have dedicated lobbyist to engage the commercial entities trying to blame recreational fishermen and women, we (the recreational fishermen) will face a decline in creels and seasons.

Like I said earlier, if it were true CCA would be all over it and we would have a grassroots alert from them. I have heard nothing so I would chalk it up to rumor. However like wevans said there is a very strong rumor about the grouper limit being changed.

This isn't about trout but it was brought up last night at the NFGFC meeting by Jerry Gerardi that there was a FWC meeting this week regarding decreasing the slot size on redfish in FL and not one person from the public attended.

There will be a final public meeting next month and without protest the upper slot size will be lowered to 26". Either fisherpeople aren't aware this is happening or aren't concerned by that minor of a change.
Tom have you read anything about this from CCA?

Beginning June 20, anglers fishing the Louisiana waters of Sabine Lake and the Calcasieu Lake bay system south of Lake Charles will be limited to taking no more than 15 speckled trout per day, down 10 fish from Louisiana's current statewide 25-trout daily limit.
The trout limit cut was adopted by a 4-3 vote of the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission at that group's June 1 meeting.
Texas has a 10 fish limit, I think our border states have some pretty big limits, we have more shoreline and more anglers so I guess it equals out. Five is a good limit, I just catch them for fun in most cases anyway. If they lowered it, the meat hunters would be most effected. I believe some parts of the state have a closed season anyway.
Slot limit of not less than 15" and not more than 20" in the Northeast and South regions and not less than 15" and not more than 24" in the Northwest Region; closed season is November and December in the South region, February in the Northwest region, and December through February in the Northeast region; 5 per person per day limit in the South and Northeast regions; 7 per person per day limit in the Northwest Region; may possess one fish over the maximum size limit. South region is from Volusia-Flagler county line southward along the Atlantic and from the Pinellas-Pasco County line southward along the Gulf coast. Northeast region is waters north of the Volusia-Flagler county line. Northwest region is waters north and west of the Pinellas-Pasco County line.

Dang, I didn't realize there was a meeting last night.......I'm planning on being at all of them now that I'm back in town.
Regulations, sizes, bags,.......I really don't believe we have much say so. No matter how much we or a club fusses and fights about it. We are looked at as people who don't have enough facts to make any judgment by those who do their research from an ivory tower.
It doesn't matter that us who have fished for many years in the same waters have seen such an increase in fish size and population. It is not about the fisherman may he be recreational or commercial. I feel it comes from those who wishes there was no hunting and fishing all together. And those with interest in tourism.
I never understood why when the net ban was pasted in 1995 that the bag limit for trout was lowered and the size limit was increased.
One day there will be a fishing season just like hunting. It is all being done in moderation.

There were several meetings around the state and the prior meetings were workshops and they had general public representation, they are stated by name on some of the historical records on FWC website.
If there is a real concern, then you should use this forum to escalate that concern and contact your CCA representative about what is being done by the CCA. I know alot of people have used online petitions in the past, not sure if they hold water. But you have a free resource to rally support and express your concerns.

Just talked to Jack, he got it second hand but supposedly from FWC originally. Posibly to take place the first of the year. Can anyone contact CCA or FWC to confirm?
