Went fishing today at the Aucilla. Me and two buddies got to the ramp around 7 a.m. and made our way out to the island. Fished around the island for about 30 minutes (me throwing a spinnerbait, two buddies fishing with live shrimp on the bottom) and didn't get a hit. Moved out into the mouth of the Aucilla where we proceeded to fish for another 30 minutes to an hour without a hit. By 10 a.m. moved out to a fairly long stretch of rock grass (in approximately 2 ft. of water) and caught one 22" redfish. By this time the tide was extremely low and we had to motor very slowly just to get back to the mouth of the river. Around noon made our way back up into the river and tried to throw some jigs and live shrimp into some deeper holes that we had marked. Proceeded to catch around 15-20 small trout (8-12 inches) and a small red and flounder. As we were making our way to the ramp, the river looked like Boca Grande Pass with about 6-10 boats fishing two different spots on the river no bigger than an acre. You had to dodge people casting left and right just to get through to head to the ramp while staying in the deeper water. Since I am new to fishing both the St. Marks and the Aucilla in the winter, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to target catching trout and reds? Maybe a new approach to take?

Nice report Casey.

The best advice I can give is to get away from all the other boats. This time of year fish a creek, and slow your presentation down.

Nice red and a good try. Sounds like the fish aren't in the river yet in any numbers, but give them time and more cold weather. They will show up and fish'in will improve.
