Aucilla 12-1-06

Checked the radar about 9:30AM and realized the front was moving through earlier than expected. Left T'ville around 10:45 and headed for the Aucilla. I am not very familiar with the river and I have heard nothing but horror stories about hitting rocks. Anyway, stopped in at JT's and got 3 dozen shrimp just for good measure. On the water about 12:00 and the tide appeared to be at slack high. Motored down to the mouth expecting to hit a rock any minute and it ended up being a smooth ride. I was met by rather unpleasant south winds that made it too difficult to get out around the marker at the mouth. Having never fished in the river, so I decided to make the most of the afternoon and try to fish along the shoreline of the river. After an hour of nothing I decided it was a bust. Well, the tide got moving pretty good and my luck changed. I was fishing aroung the east side of the island in the river and caught 3 reds (one 23" and 2 pups ) and 2 trout (16" and 13") around the island. All three reds on a shrimp (no weight - tail hooked) and both trout were on a gulp shrimp with a lite jig head - no cork. Off the water at 3:30 and satisfied with a maiden voyage to new water. BTW - didn't hit any rocks, but assume I just got lucky. I will have to go back on a low tide and get a feel for the area.
