Road-Kill

The cleaning a squirrel post made me think of this;

My Grandmother was the champion of roadkill. It may not be something to be proud of, But it is worthy of some cool reading. All of this is very true and not made up. My Grandmother "Nana" would pick up roadkill most mornings. It would be Rabbits, Squirrels and two times that I know of a deer. During the day if she saw a Turtle crossing the road she would get it too. Note: The softshells were allways the toughest, She said when you grab them by their hind legs they will try to bite you due to their long necks.

Here is a little about "Nana". She was raised in South Georgia. She met my Grandfather who was from Cocoa Florida and that is where they lived. and of course where my Mother grew up and I went to elementry school. Nana worked at McDonald Douglas for around 20 years. Back then most people in the area worked for the Space Program. Why I bring this up is because when the Space Shuttle blew up in '86 she said that morning that it wouldn't work because it was to cold. "The gaskets will not hold." So she had some smarts.

I could go on and on about her with more great stories. The times she had her Bar-B-Q resturant, a Bar and a welding Shop. Even the time she crossed I-95 on foot in the morning to shoot a 6 point buck on her way to work. Then had to drag it back across I-95 to put it in her Datsun station wagon.

I will share some more..............

Got to love them good old southern grandparents... :thumbup: I'll never forget the 1st time I helped my "pawpaw" slaughter a hog. Or the time he shot a hole in his floorboard trying to get his shotgun out of the truck. :o
I sure do miss that old man! :thumbup:

I rode a bicycle from Seattle, WA to Washington DC in 1998 for the American Lung Associations Big Ride. Its 3200 miles and one of the riders "A real Freak from San Francisco" took pictures of all the roadkill he saw along the trip. He published a coffee table book out of it and made a lot of money.

Cain't say I ever ate anything road killed (that I know of). We caught our possums in box traps and mostly shot rabbits and squirrels. We generally ate them, if we didn't sell them in the quarters. My grandad did teach me how to skin and clean them for cooking. My grand mama and mom would cook anything we brought home, including sparrows, I would shoot. Fried squirrel or rabbit, smothered in brown gravy and rice, baked possum or racoon and sweet potatoes comes to mind. :D
Road kill would probably be okay, if the varmint weren't too mangled or flat and hadn't laid out there too long. :-D

That's funny. It reminds me of my Grandfather who was a Sumter County FL local.
