Freddy, my neighbor and buddy, ask me to go along with he and some church friends from Douglasville Ga, to do a little grouper fishing, yesterday.
This was kind of a special deal, because one of the guest, Matt Holoway, is mobile restricted, as a result of loosing the use of his legs in a motorcycle accident some 6 years ago.
Tuesday night the NWS was giving 1-2 and smooth in the bay, but in the early AM changed it to 2-3 and 1-2 in the bay. So, it was questionable as to whether we would be able to make the trip.
We decided to go take a look. The January sky was overcasted and the temp was in the 50-55deg range.
Besides the very low tide at the ramp, water conditions were as stated in the latest forecast. It took us about an hour or more, to go the 8/9 miles from the ramp to 30' off the east end of Dog Island- A slow go for sure in the chop, but worth the effords of our good captain.
The crew consisted of Freddy and I, and Matt and his 8 yo son, Jacob, and Matt's FIL, Floyd.
Being the anchor hand, I took Jake up front with me, where he caught on to the workings of a bottom fishing rig in quick order. He took the honor of being the first to boat a fish, a 24" gag.
The wind, which had been up to 10mph or more, seemed to settle a little around 1:30pm, allowing the water to calm somewhat.
The second fish in the boat was landed by Floyd, a 38" red, a twin to the one I caught last week. Natually, it was returned to the deep to propagate.
Then, it was Jake again with another nice fish at 26".
Floyd caught 2 more keepers, including a nice black grouper.
Matt finally got in on the action with a 30" gag- this being the high point in our little fishing adventure.
Freddy and I were at zero in the catching department, when we decided to take it to the hill at around 3:30.
We put out a couple of stretch's and troll our way in. Nothing happening there, except for the attack of the black bass as pictured below. Freddy and I decided to share the count on this one, since he was doing the driving and I did the reeling. :-D
Total of 5 keepers were boated, all on LY's and squid. No short or grunts were caught.

Matt handling the ride. He did have on an inflatable PFD under those coveralls, by the way.
