Almost Fishing Trip 1/6

After honey dues and since the sun came out I checked the beachview.com and shell point cam and decided to go for a few hours.
Pulled some frozen bait from the frig and started south.

When I pulled out of the driveway it sounded like my safety chains or something was dragging so I did a walkaround and shrugged my shoulders - nothing out of place...

Got to Woodville Hwy and kept hearing something not right and thought it must be the winch handle wiggling. Just past CC I looked back and saw the starboard wheel had the beginnings of a good wobble :o Started looking for a place to ditch and then saw the dustcover fly off and make its way toward the walking trail :( Just North of the trail parking I pulled over and found that the inside bearings had disintegrated :smt011

Well, not being a star scout I had no replacement bearings :smt013
Called my lovely wife and told her to come on with the stuff after she checked to see if K-Mart or WM had a replacement set.

While I waited I called previous owner to see if there was anything I needed to know about the bearing setup and he said that it was a stepped hub  (inside is a tad bigger than the outside)

Soon to find out that my oldest son was on the way to find the bearings and wife came with the floor jack, some wipies? and support. Son shows up with set that fit the outside but not inside. Sent him to WM and wife went to get more stuff.

Then my DIL parents show up out of the blue to offer support - they just happened along headed back to town from Woodville. Son called and asked what the numbers were on the bearings? Told him the inside bearing was disintegrated and couldn't tell... then he asked couldn't I take off the other wheel to find out :-? told him that wasn't an option...

He shows up after finding the right set from boater's world
Then DIL's uncle shows up with sound advice and suggestions and even a socket that fit the hub nut. The rain clouds were heading up from the south and dusk wasn't too far away when the tire went back on and the majority of grease was wiped off. Just as we we u'ed and headed N the rain reached us. Had to blow my horn at one of the derby drivers at the roundabout but made it home.

Moral: 2:30 might be a tad late to start out; check/replace the other set of bearings; have the backup set on board(maybe pre-pack them?)

Blessings: not too far from home; not cold, dark or wet; the wheel didn't come off, flip the boat and kill somebody; good to know you can count on friends and family in a crunch.

If I had been that close to the ramp,I would have dragged it on down, gone fishing then dragged it home for repairs.
I guess that's the difference between me and you.

I feel your pain. Had a bearing take a crap on me 27 right at the Och. bridge. No spare, tools, nothing. Left it in the parking lot of some business to come back the next morning. I now travel with bearings hubs etc...... ruined a good trip too.

I think everyone goes through that before carrying an extra hub kit. Just get you a spare and you'll be fine.

I carry a spare hub assembly. Pre greased and ready to go. Cost about $30 and can be installed in about 15 minutes and in the dark if you have to. It is cheap insurance for what will happen to everyone eventually.
