Running speeds versus the seas

Laying aside bragging rights about how our boats can hit 45-plus speeds on a flat bay, I am interested in what folks consider common sense speeds heading off-shore in 1-2, 2-3 or even 3-4 foot seas - taking into consideration that 4 second wave intervals deserve more consideration than 14-second wave intervals.
I realize answers will be impacted by size and hull of the boat, powertrain size, and even diesel vs gasoline - but just trying to common up with some common sense boating practices.
thanks.
