My Dad come over for a couple of days this week to help me pour some concrete. While watching the concrete dry we did some talking about when he was a boy in Apalach and a young man in Panama City.

He said Grouper and Red Snapper would go for around 5 to 10 cent a pound. Redfish, Bluefish, Spanish would go around 6 cent a pound. Speckle Trout was 25 cents a pound. He said on Saturday morning he could go catch two Speckled Trout sell them for 50 cents then go to the movies have a Coke and something to eat.
He also said Pompano was the high dollar fish, even then they were 65 cents a pound.
As far as Redfish, he said most people didn't eat them. his response was, why would you when you had plenty of Mullet and Trout.

Talked to my Dad about shrimp. He said the shrimp got shipped out of town because nobody could afford them. He thinks they were just under a dollar a pound but wasn't sure. They never bought any.

My wife and I were at Spring Creek last week. When we turned around in the Spears parking lot it reminded me of a outing with my Dad 50 years ago. I told her about it.
He and I would ride down to Spears to pick up fish for his restaurant. When we went we always went into the oyster bar for fresh shucked oysters. The oyster bar was built out over Spring Creek channel. A dozen oysters on the half shell and a bottle of Coke was 50 cents. A smoked mullet was a quarter.
Those were the days.

I bought a pint of oysters in Moultrie Tuesday (Jan 30, 2007) and paid $10.95 for them at WinnDixie. They were unmarked in the seafood dept or I wouldn't have bought them. Never again. Oyster stew is great this time of year...but at this price....forget it.

I think you can get a bushel for 25 dollars at My Way in Panacea.

Speaking of Spring Creek Restaurant......They have all you can eat catfish and quail for $9.95 going on.

28 for a bag, I think, picked up a 1/2 bag for 14 bucks yesterday for the wife to shuck (me havin' this bad thumb and all, ya' know), they were gooooood.
