Rock bass
Is anbody catching any? I'm itching to go and try to catch some. Can't go before Saturday so I won't get in on the trout. Don't really care. I just want some rocky's. I've talked to some offshore boys who are catching some while grouper fishing but haven't heard any reports from the flats. I usually do best in 10-15 ft. and am just wondering if they're out there. Thanks.

Good afternoon,
Say... when you go in search of the Rock Bass where are you leaving from? I would sure like to find some locations in the 10 to 15 ft range. I have a 19 carolina skiff (semi-v) and that (depth 10'-15') would be perfect for my travels. Hope your able to get out this weekend and good luck. I typically lanch from St Marks, Aucilla or Econ. and have run as far out as 17 or 18 miles and 35-37 ft of water on a really good day. But 10 or 15 ft depths would be realistic most of the time for me. Thanks.

SR,
Afternoon to you! I fish primarily out of Econfina. If you go out past bird rack #2, you will find the depths I'm speaking of. If you go out far enough, until you can barely see rack #2, you will be in a maze of crab pots. My friends and I call it crab pot island. No island, but plenty of baskets! Chunk a fat piece of cutup pinfish on bottom there and hold on. I save all the grubs that tear on me or get the tails bitten off and use those along with the cutbait. Just looks better to me. Don't know if there's anything to it. Holler for me on 14 sometime when you're there. I will be there almost every Saturday from the beginning of March until December.

Thanks for the report and your willingness to share info with a struggl'n fisherman.
Let me make sure I'm on the same page with you about bird racks.
Going out of the Econ river... due south (I'm a poor judge of distance but I'd guess its 2 or 3 miles from the river entrance tripod) and you run into a platform. If you look east on a clear day you see another platform of the same design. Is this the second bird rack you are speaking of or do I need to continue south from the first platform I referenced? By the way.. I have located a hole almost directly in between the two that drops down to around 15 ft or so from 6 or 7 feet everywhere else. I've never had any success there but it sure seems like it should hold some fish if the conditions are right.
I ordered some "fishbites" on Monday... hope they get here before the weekend so I can maybe test them out. Thanks again.

Yes, the one you see to the east is #2. I go to it so often, I usually know how to point the boat directly at it when I come by the tripod. If you head toward Rock Island from the mouth, you will see it and then can make a beeline to it. Go beyond it, southward. I think I know where that hole is between the mouth and the first rack. I believe I've read on here that it's a crater formed from a bomb or missile or something such as that. Might be mistaken. Tom knows I'm sure. That may be around rack #2 though. As far as giving information, that's what this board is for......I think.
There's plenty out there for all of us! Good luck. If you are at the Econ Saturday, I may see you there.

I think I know where rock island is. Someone told me its not that far of a run from Keaton. I will look at the chart at the marina before I go out on Sat. The last time I went out with my son we both caught several black bass around 14 to 15 inches along with a 17 1/2 lb Red Fish in about 25 foot of water south of Keaton. It was a good day on thw water but aren't all days on the water good?
Thanks
Kevin
