St. Marks 2/23/07

Launched from the LH around 10:45. 3rd in line getting out.
Don't you folks have jobs.

Headed to a creek east of St. Marks hoping to find some trout. The trout were there but I couldn't get'em to bite. Saw some 25 "+ trout.
Fished up and down the creek w/o any luck. Exited the creek hoping to fish a mudflat to the west. I could see boats in there already and another boat on the way. Plan B.
Headed to the redfish hole. As usual no one there. (Half expected to see TinCan
) Took my time getting in, positioning the boat upwind to drift the sweet spot. Found a nice school of reds sunning among the oysters. Quickly hooked up and landed 1, then lost the school. Circled around for another try. Jackpot. Another hookup and a fat red in the boat. Kept this up until the school had had enough, and they headed for safer grounds. I was only able to boat 5 out of the 400 in the school. I hate schooling reds. I would much rather have that 400 fish scattered over a flat. Then you can really work them over.
Eased on towards the east and managed to put 4 more in the boat. Tried for trout around a good school of mullet and bait. No luck. I'm thinking the last cold weather may have finally put them in a creek. Of course if this spring weather hangs around they won't stay in the creeks long.
I intended to use today to find and catch a few trout. I got the finding part down, but the catching part was pretty tough. Guess I gotta keep trying.
Ended the day with 9 reds to 30". Caught half on the gold spoon and half on a Bayou Buck in-line spinnerbait. I really like the Bayou Buck spinners. The redfish seemed to like them too.
Can't wait til next time.
