HEY CHARLIE, IF IT HAS THE ORIGINAL TANK CAP, IT WILL HAVE A SMALL THUMB SCREW IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAP, TURN IT COUNTER CLOCKWIZE AND IT WILL VENT THE CAP. THIS WILL ALLOW THE FUEL TO FLOW TO THE CARP.

I've got an older 4hp Evinrude that I had to do some carb work on to get it running. If venting your tank doesn't help, and it will run by doing the gravity feed thing, then can you keep it running by pumping the hose once in a while? If so, then I would suspect fuel pump. If the little diaphram in the fuel pump gets perforated through cracking by age or otherwise, then what you are describing would happen. A fuel pump kit is pretty cheap and the fuel pump should be on the outside of the engine and pretty accessible and fairly simple to work on.
