Is there any difference between using a bucket or wind sock?
I heard once that JT uses his overalls but I don't have any of them - but I do have a couple of different buckets that I've tried.

Last I tried, a bucket doesn't fit my foot real well.
Seriously, I think it depends on the size of the boat. A bucket would probably work fine for a skiff style boat, but for a bay boat like mine it wouldn't be adequate. My use for one is to keep the bow into waves in the event of engine troubles in deep water, so I want one that works well.

A sock is much easier to retrieve than a bucket. After pulling that bucket in a dozen times, you'll wish you had a sock.

A bucket aint that bad if you screw an eyelet into the bottom and attach a retrieval line to it

I have been using a 36" parachute (military surplus) with 30-40ft of line for the past year. In the deep water it works great. It's a pilot chute out of main backpack parachute, made of ripstop nylon and with the round spring remove- Dries quick, Takes up little or no storage space. They can be had on eBay for 2.00 to about 30.00. A good price for the one I have is 10 to 15 bucks.
