leader to braid

Post by basstired »

I was interested in the the general concensus on attaching a flurocarbon leader to braid. I'm using green powerpro braid and Fireline, both 10lb. I have a spool of 14lb Vanish and use the the standard double uni-knot. Five twists on the braid and and four on the fluro? or four and three? I want adequate strength without the the speed bumps slowing acceleration. Would a smaller test leader be the answer? :smt009
I'm doing a comparison between Power Pro and and Fireline, wear and castability. The Fireline seems to have the edge. :smt014

Try an albright knot. Instructions are on the little paper inside the Powerpro box. 25-30 wraps of the braid on the mono is what you need.

Blood knot. Tag ends are on the inside of the knot so it doesn't pick up grass, and moves thru guides without notice.

I use a modified version of this. But instead of a loop, I have my flouro and braid together and tie it just like this and clip off the excess. Its quick.

Mine looks more like this.

Some of the strongets knots for this use are the bimini twist to the yucatan or no name knot. Another strong knot is the Alberto (double albright). The problem with braid is the slippage factor. You generally have to make twice the twist as mono to keep it from slipping. To test this, wet the brai with five turns and pull against something solid. It will usually slip every time. Florida Sportsman magazine produced a knot testing article a couple of years ago on braid knots and really opened my eyes.

I found this knot online....and I was amazed at how small it was and how good it held... took me a time or 2 to understand it but one I got it figured out, it is a great knot to attach braid to mono.....
