St. Marks 3-24

Fished in the FSU Fishing Club tourney. Got to St. Marks around daylight and ran a long ways to the west. Almost to the Aucilla. Fished around oyster bars using topwaters, suspending twitchbaits, and soft plastics and caught 6 trout that had been cut out of the same mold. All were 18.5"-19". Worked our way east towards St. Marks, staying in close to the shore. We couldn't find any 20+" fish. When you fish in a "big fish" tourney, you kinda need these to win any money. Unfortuneatly, we never found the type of fish that BirdDog caught...maybe we just couldn't find his pinfish traps that he keeps his "tournament fish" in...At the end of the day, we caught a limit of trout, but our best five probably weighed around 8 lbs. Hooked a couple under-slot reds, but couldn't find any big boys. We did have a school of probably 100 reds circle the boat, but couldn't get any of them to bite. These were all quality reds with several looking like they were at the top end of the slot. When they were around the boat, we had a couple almost beach themselves on the oyster bar beside us and had to wriggle their way back into the water. First time something like that's ever happened to me.
All in all, we explored a new area, fished in the same place as the guys that won the tourney, and caught fish. And we didn't sink the boat. A damn fine day on the water. Even got to enjoy a few red and whites. Life is good.
Old Man River finally catches a trout.
