I saw where dophinatic went out this past weekend and the divers got some hogfish. Have any of you ever gotten into them out of the Carrabelle area. I have always wanted to boat one. Do any of you have any suggestions on catching these?

The generally cannot be caught on hook and line. The instances where they have been are usually accidental. Because of their diet they are difficult to catch. They feed on coral polyps and small crustaceans. There is a rumor that they can be caught on asparagus spears. And yes there are plenty out of Carabelle.

If you know they are thick in certain area, you could probably target them using live shrimp. Be ready to also catch a lot of junk fish, ie. pinfish, grunts etc.

Like Tom said, this one was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Caught off Charleston in 180' water on a small cigar minnow I was offering to Mr. goruper.
That's not a 48Q cooler.

I caught one once off of Key West

Man, that was a nice one there. Good job! I will carry some live shrimp and see if maybe I can get lucky. Do they hang at structure, live coral, wrecks?

Mann That's one heck of a fish. I'll bet he put up a good fight.

They will eat shrimp, we catch they in the keys on 5' 20# flouro, #3 hook...you just find one then let your shrimp drift towards em, works well in no spearfishing zones.
