SAFETY CHECK POINT SCHEDULED
The Tallahassee Police Department will conduct two safety checkpoints on Thursday,
April 19, 2007. The Checkpoints will begin at approximately 8 p.m. and terminate at
approximately 12:30 a.m. The checkpoints will be conducted along the 800 block of
Thomasville Road and the 2500 block of West Tharpe Street. The purpose of these
checkpoints is to detect drivers who are too impaired to operate a motor vehicle, detect
vehicles with faulty equipment, and those operating a vehicle without a driver license.
In 2005, Florida had 23,864 alcohol related crashes and a total of 1,239 alcohol related
fatalities. Approximately one-third of all traffic fatalities were alcohol related. The
Tallahassee Police Department investigated eight (8) traffic fatalities in 2006. Three (3)
of the eight (8) fatalities were alcohol related.
These check points will be well marked by signage, marked patrol vehicles and
uniformed officers. The checkpoints are designed to have minimal impact on traffic flow
and to save lives.
