I plan on renting a boat from the Shell Island Fish Camp the last week of this month. Are there any hotspots you all could tell me about. The lady said we would have to stay in the flats, what are the flats and where do they end. I am not as stupid as that last questions sounds, just wanting to make sure.
any help greatly appreciated

When you get the boat you will want to run down the river past the lighthouse and turn east just after the #6 red bouy. Run east for 2 miles and start fishing with a grub under a cajunthunder. Try to find some sandy areas and fish around these.

You should see a couple of poles sticking up to the south of that area. This is what is commonly reffered to as the stakeline. This is where I consider the flats to begin/end. But you can still run that boat anywhere you want, just have to watch the fuel.

thanks for the help. You and your group of online fishing buddies are going to make this a great fishing trip for me. I love the site and will be drooling at it until I get there.
Thanks again for info and a great site

Let me clarify something here, when Tom says run, he means on the OUTSIDE of the stakeline :D If you RUN on the inside of the stakeline, you will "in all likelyhood" loose the foot of the outboard to a rock :o It is great fishin over there, but you will be carefull or pay for not being so 8)

No wevans, when I said run I meant run east from the # 6 bouy. That is the safe water mark for running to the east flats. As long as you don't run any more than 2 miles you will be fine. After 2 miles THEN it better be outside the stake line or at idle.

i fish this area 75% of the time. Use live shrimp or a jig (saltwater assassin) 12-18 in. under a cajun thunder. Every once in a while give it a pop. In my opinion, topwater lures are the most exciting way to catch fish, Chugbugs and Mirrolure top dogs work good.
