Mowing

So there I was, mowing the yard down at Live Oak Island yesterday afternoon. Veeery dusty. The only grass doing well is a few patches of St. Augustine and a little Bahia, the weeds seem to be doing quite well in this dry weather. Had to stop every thirty minutes and beat out the airfilter on the mower. That sand really eats up a mower blade.

Oh yeah, this is the fishing forum.

So there I was, started wading, casting around a TopDog Jr., a little before 6. With the wind out of the north, I expected the biting flies to be bad, and there were a few around, but not terrible. Nothing happening on topwater even though it was less than about waist deep. About 6:30 picked up a little rat red on a green back Catch 2000. Caught another about the same size about ten minutes later. A squadron of pelicans glided by. Missed a strike. Got cussed out by an osprey for being on his hole.

Shortly after 7. HUNPF. "This feels like a little better fish."
"Keep his head up. Keep him out of the rocks."
"Dang, this is a lot better fish."
"He's too big."
"Measure him anyway, just to be sure."
"He's a lot too big, and I don't see the lure."
"He took the entire Catch 2000 into his mouth."
Sure 'nuff, he got the rear treble all the way back to his crushers like he meant to eat that little finger mullet.
After a little working around, I finally got my lure back without tearing up the fish any worse and slapped the tape on him.

32".
"Trim his tail."
"You'd have to cut his whole tail off. 5" too long."

"C'mon fish, breathe......breathe."
"Yeah, that's it......I can feel you starting to flex up now. Take it easy, relax and breathe a minute."
A couple minutes later.
"Good, a little kick. I'm going to hold on a little longer......until you feel a little stronger."
He kicked a couple more times a little harder, and I let him kick away out of my hand and watched him glide off.

Retie, back to it.
"Dang, dang, dang, three fish and every one of them either well under or well over the slot."
Two casts later into the same area the big one came out of and BLOOSH, sounded like somebody threw a cinderblock in the water. My Catch 2000 must have been just under the surface.
"Another big one."
"I hope he's 5" smaller than the last one."

26 1/2, time to go. Probably could have picked up a few trout if I'd stuck with it a little longer, but it was time to head for the house and supper. :D

Doesn't it feel good to feel them get their life back, and swim away  I always feel good after doing that.
Of course it's another good feeling to drop them in hot grease too :-D
