First, thanks to everyone who makes this website a success. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks, trying to learn answers to my questions on my own and am amazed at the wealth of knowledge offered here.
I'm a former inshore salt water angler-no, fisherman-who used to live in Mobile and loved to fish Dauphin Island, Mobile Bay and the surrounding rivers for specks, reds, flounder and whatever else was kind enough to bite my hook. Unfortunately, I was relocated to North Alabama (Huntsville) on a duty station change several years ago-I'm active duty military. When I read about the fun you guys are having, it really makes me miss the gulf coast!
I'm fortunate enough to have a week scheduled with family at SGI(see, I have been reading!), I was careful enough to book a place inside the Plantation so I'd at least have Sikes Cut access. I've fished there twice before, just from the jetties, but I obviously wasn't armed well enough for what was biting-broken off more times than I care to remember.
REQUEST-I am searching for a reputable inshore guide for a full day of inshore fishing so I can share that experience with my 2 sons (13 and 17). My oldest got a taste of saltwater fishing when he was younger, but the 13 year old only knows freshwater lakes and streams. I was hesitant to even post this, since I'm sure ya'll are bombed every summer with the whole 'who's a decent guide' question, but because there are so many out there and it's easy to make a website look nice, I decided to take the risk and ask the real subject matter experts.
I'll still be doing some fishing at the cut and a little more on the surf and down at the state park. While it's true that a bad day fishing beats a good day at most anything else, believe me-any day where you can feel the sand on your toes and the wind and surf in your face sure beats a good day fishing anywhere else. If anyone would be kind enough to give me a little nudge in the right direction about the guide question or fishing in general in and around the cut, I'd be most grateful.
Until then, I'll keep scrolling thru the incredible pictures and reading the stories of the trips you've made. One of my all time favorites (so far) HAS to be the cobia story where the 2 neighbors were fishing together. That's great stuff!!
