Forget Econfina, if you want to breath some fresh air, go up to Dahlonega this weekend with Noleflyfisher - plenty of fresh air up there...I'm thinking about doing the same myself & stay a week; that = about how long it will take the good Lord to send us some rain, put the fires out, and clean up our air - at least, maybe longer!!!

The smoke was thick at Econfina this morning. But it mostly cleared out this afternoon.

As long as the wind is coming from the east, we'll get smoke - this is all from the complex of fires burning in Columbia/Baker counties and the Okeefenokee. Until steady rains start, the fires will continue to burn. This year is similar to 1998 and when the rain finally started in July of 1998, it started in a big way. We also had Hurricane Earl in 1998 - not much for Tallahassee, but still a hurricane.

Anybody else see smoke on the refuge yesterday evening east of Spring Creek Highway, or was it my imagination?

To quote GS when I posted about the fires around the Lighthouse
OK, the fires, the ranger told me there were 7 of them actively burning in the Refuge, will not affect access to the lighthouse ramp because of where they are located and that they have had people on them almost from the word go. He said that they are attacking it by trying to "dig the fires out of the peat" before they can really get established...
Probably what ya saw

Reminds me of that song..."Smoke on the water...and fire in the skies!"

Bad Smoke all the way from Valdosta to Port St. Joe...but when I turned onto the Cape....no smoke...not even the smell of smoke. It was a great relief!!!
