fly fishing for reds and trout

does anybody have any tips on fly fishing for reds and trout, such as best flies for this area, recommended line, leaders and other gear?
I have a Temple Fork 8wt rod and a Medalist 1495 reel that I use for bass that I'd like to try in the salt. I picked up a few ladyfish a couple of weeks ago and it was a blast.

noleflyfisher is your man for that info, but I think he'll tell you a chart/white clouser will catch them all. Just search for his fishing post and you'll see he knows a thing or two about a thing or two

Terrier, clousers are the Gulps! of the flyfishing world. Not very sexy but they catch the hell out of fish. Chartreuse over white, orange over white, brown over olive and rust with gold are all great colors (although I'm not sure it matters). Other patterns worth having in your box are Kwans, merkins and mangrove critters (for reds and sheepshead) and toads, seaducers and deceivers (for reds and trout).
Your outfit is perfect for trout and reds (make sure you wash the reel thoroughly after salt use). I use a nine foot 12lb leader with a couple feet of 20lb fluoro shock. That system works for everything that swims in our inshore waters (with the exception of tarpon and sharks). Good luck, Nole.

Hey everybody - thanks for all the tips. This saltwater flyfishing has all the makings of a perfect male hobby: difficult, impracticable, expensive and lots of opportunities for cursing and beer drinking.

Sorry for the Delay in the repost of Capt Reggie's PM - Here 'tis:
I would say that you have started out with the all around recommended basic 9-foot, 8# flyrod and reel! I started out with the moderately priced stuff and now am using a 4-piece, travel #8 G. Loomis Rod & Lever-drag STH reel (but recently purchased an inexpensive backup Okuma reel)! Now, on to some lines, leaders, & flies for the two regarded species. I'll discuss them one at a time because the environment or habitat, techniques and fishing applications are somewhat different for them!
Basic setup for both species will be as follows:
FLY LINE:
A. Hi-Vis Floating flyline.
B. Clear Sinking-tip flyline.
C. Clear Intermediate full sinking flyline.
LEADERS:
A. 6-7-foot, #8-10 tippet, 16" #30 Fluorocarbon Shock Leader.
B. 9-foot, #12 tippet, 20" #40 Fluorocarbon Shock Leader.
C. 12-foot, #16 tippet, 24" #50 Fluorocarbon Shock Leader.
1. Trout =
Use the Hi-vis Floating line early in the day, or overcast days, on the flats, in 2-4 feet of selective trout clear waters, with leaders A or B.
FLIES - Deerhair Finger Mullet designs in colors of Gray & Chartreuse, Large Pencil Poppers in colors of Blue/Silver, Red/White, & Chartruese, Dahlberg Diver designed Hair-flies in multicolors, & Seaducers in Red/White & Yellow/Red).
Use Clear Sinking-tip line later in the day and, especially, when sun is bright and water is clear to slightly stained, on the flats, in 4-6 feet of selective trout waters, with leader B.
FLIES - weighted Lefty Deceivers in multicolors of Blue/Silver/White & Green/Chartreuse/White, Epoxy Shrimp flies, 1/0-3/0 sizes, in colors of Natural, Pink, Chartreuse, & Root-beer.
2. Redfish =
Use Sinking-tip line in shallower waters around structure like oyster bars, docks, piers, creek mouths, small island grass pods, with leader B.
FLIES - Crab flies, Shrimp flies & Seaducers in natural colors for the crab & shrimp and outlandish colors for the Seaducers!
Use Clear Intermediate Sinking line in deeper water around bars channels, deep holes, etc., in conjunction with leader C (because you may hook up with other "toothy" species or cobia).
FLIES - Deep Clouser Minnow, weighted Lefty Deceivers, Crab & Shrimp flies of various colors as above!
IF you are really new to the game of fly fishing the salt water, you may want to book a trip with someone who can "show you the ropes", so to speak. If you don't have a friend who is "in to it", give me a jingle AFTER THE CLASSIC and we will book a trip on my boat (or yours)!
P.S. I don't charge for the service of guiding (as a captain), whoever goes with me just pays for the trip costs, okay!

Hey Ya'all - I'm just getting warmed up! Come to next month's NFGFC meeting where I'll put out the rest of the information on beginning through intermediate salt water inshore fly fishing during the meeting! There will be an assembly of fly fishing equipment to see, copies of the lecture for all (done in Powerpoint), and, hopefully, a show & tell forum, using Powerpoint or my slide projector!
For those that are interested, I'm trying to run down some names & numbers on
certified fly casting instructors in our area for those beginners who want to jump into the "world of fishing the long rods", eh!
Then, there are the
specialized licensed guides out there that can accommodate beginning through advanced fly fishermen for a fee. Of course, one can always take a chance and fish with an old "has been" fly fisherman, like me, for free! Or, fish with some of the people on the net or in the club who will take you out!
