The leader material is stiffer. That's the only difference I've noticed.
I buy the spool of line, instead of the leader material. You save a good bit of money.

I use fluorocarbon line a lot, mainly for its superior toughness and abrasion resistance, it doesn't "nick" near the hook/lure after you have caught a few fish, which mono tends to do.
It also is less visible in water than mono, doesn't UV degrade as quickly and is low stretch.
In an active days fishing I would change a mono leader anything between 5 and 10 times, I don't usually change a fluoro leader for a few trips.
I also have it straight through on a couple of my reels.

What he said and the difference between Flourocarbon line and flourocarbon leader is abrasion resistance.

I would like to add that it produces better knot strength, especially when tying on shock leaders. I've found that it is excellent to use when forming various knots - like the Clinch, Trilene, Palomar, Surgeon's, etc. I can get away with the smaller diameter shock leader (#20 & #30) too, which spooks less fish!!!
