Headed out of sheilds at 5:45 Sat. Morn. for some offshore fun. Got out to the birdrack and headed east lookin ta chum up some bait, waste of time. Could only manage 4 in 1/2 hr so we were of to deeper water. Started off with trollin some stretch 15s in 25', red/white & fire tiger. Got to hit the takle store soon after losing 8 to whatever with out one fish ta show for it :smt011 Quickly decided that wasnt gonna work so I punched in some numbers S.E. of 24 for some bottom action. My son and Buddy Rodney proceede to catch one short Gag after another,I couldnt buy a nibble. managed 10-12 grunts for cut bait but no keeper grouper. Pulled up to try different numbers about 10:00. Once again I couldnt get a bite while Rodney hooked in to a nice Red Groupa on cut bait, then Clint,His first keeper red, while I'm still skunked :-? I decided to try something different so I cast of the port as far as I could, Rock Bass :lick: then another. Pulled up and moved over there, wise choice  Proceeded to wear my poor arm out with one fish after another for the next 3 hrs while the other 2 had slim pickins. After all the ribbing I got in the AM it was good ta give em a little pay back with a strong finish tripling their catch :D

Tally
20 Gags/3 keppers
5 red groupas/ kept 3
to many grunts
7 rock bass
1 shark
remoras,remoras,remoras I only caught 1 :-D
My camera is down so we stopped of at Jerry's for some Pics, will post after he E-mails them to me.

Happy Boy with his reds

Completly forgot to mention Clint caught a short AJ while trolling in 25' with stretch 15 which seemed rather weird to me. Has any one ever had this happen before? It was over live bottom, no wrecks around.

Yes, AJs will hang out in areas of high relief. We catch them fairly often while kingfishing over good ledges (to the point where we have to leave or fish dead bait). The winning AJ in last year's BBSC came from Desoto Canyon, no wrecks. Kind of like the AJs that come off the humps from Tavenier to Marathon. You also could have trolled past a wreck that you might have not known was there.

I wish I had a dollar for each of the short AJ's I have seen over live bottom in less than 30'. They are there nearly all year.

Thanks for the intel Tom, something only a diver would know. Do you see any keepers in that kind of structure?
