i am looking to make my first offshore trip out of appalachicola at the end of the month, any good advice?

We fish this area almost all the time. Your best bet is to go to the public numbers, Franklin, Apalach, and St george Bridge. There is always something biting on the bottom or you can pull some plugs or spoons for top action. They will be 10 or 12 miles off the cut and in from 60/80 feet. Let me know if you need more info than this.

This is a great fishing area. Go to Captain Seagull's fishing charts and purchase a 19 dollar map of the area. Great numbers on it. Go near O tower and take and hour and scour the bottom with your sonar. Trust me it will be worth the time and you will find your own little honey holes. I gave a newbie that advice a couple of weeks ago and he found some sweet grouper holes. They came in with a boat full.

BigDave, My GPS is on my boat at St. George but what I usually do at SGI is troll or just idle from the main numbers of SGI reef and look for all the relief. SGI is layed out in a big rectangle. Get the four corners off any public reefs page. There is relief all over the place between those corners. You can't miss it. Look for good relief or fish and drop there. I highly recommend getting a couple of blocks of chum. It will draw fish to you from relief out away from you. If you want to troll but keep it simple, just pull big silver spoons, red and white and mackeral colored plugs. Shallow plugs work great. If there is bait on the surface this will catch the Kings and Spanish that are pushing them up. Just put wire on your plugs(6 or 8 inches) and lighten your drags. Troll anout 5 or 6 MPH for Macks. We bottom fish until it gets hot or action is slow and then troll. Let me know how you do or if I can help you futher.

Just got back from SGI. Fishing was about as good as it gets last week. Took my dad and uncle on Saturday. Went to our first spot and the red-snapper bite was on. We had our limit in a matter of minutes. Caught a nice 28â€

BigDave - take a tip from my oldest son, Capt. Bobby (who took some soldiers offshore during the Classic) = if you see live bait on the surface, get in there with Sabiski rigs and catch a few (put them in a well circulated live well or they won't live long). Then, put them out on "Kingfish Rigs" (special small wire hook & stinger hooks) for either drifting "free lining" or "balloon rigged". You can also try very slow trolling the live bait with 4-6 oz. keel weights (<4mph) to get the livies down to the bigger fish!

Your going to need to go deeper than 45'...
O-tower is a pretty good run back to the east, C-tower is closer. The is a lot of desert out there from due south of SGI.

My advice would be to go towards this # N29 17.000 - W85 38.000 and put some king trolling gear out in 85-120' and mark good shows on your bottom machine. After a couple hours go back and fish the spots that you marked.
