Hello all, I got the link to his site off the Kayakfishingstuff.com forum. My wife and I will be vacationing at Carrabelle Palms RV Park July 1st through July 7th. It's located right in from the west tip of Dog Island. We will be bringing our OK Malibu Two and I would love to get into some good fishing.

Paddling: How is the water between the beach and Dog Island? Depending on the current, we were thinking of making a day trip out, fish, eat lunch, fish, come back. What's the shark scene like? This is our first time paddling in the brine. Any advice would be wonderful. (don't worry, we will have and wear good PFD's)

Fishing: All of my experience is with freshwater fishing, so any pointers on tackle I will need (ie: everyone says that oyster beds are hell on line, should we plan for steel or heavy weight leaders?) would be wonderful. People on the KFS forum said light to medium r&r's and popping corks and shrimp for trout. What about surf fishing? Heavy r&r's? Bait? Of course we also plan to put out some Crab nets also, any advice?

Sorry for such a long first post, but I can't stand no being prepared. So pretty much, give me any advice you can on any kind of fishing we can do from the beach or yak. Gracias!

Welcome aboard. That is a good area to fish in and I'm sure more will add to this.

First, you don't want to use steel leaders unless you run into blue fish and/or mackerel. Reds and trout are the two most targeted species and they are less likely to bite with a leader.

Second, you will need some Berkly gulps. Most use the white, new penny color and nuclear chicken colors. We fish these usually on 1/4 oz lead gig heads with the most popular color being red. Some of us fish without any type of cork, but most folks these days are using a cork called a cajun thunder with a fluorocarbon leader of 30" or shorter depending on how deep your water is. Capt Mike's spoons are very popular. There are too many top water baits to mention, but mirror lure makes a wide selection. Old standby is red head with white body.

Cajun thunder cork with a DOA Glow shrimp underneath works good. Deeper water throw a Mirrolure STTR in most any color for trout, in shallow water get a jerkbait 5-7" and run a 3/0 hook through the nose and cast it downwind of you while drifting the grass flats, and for all around diversity, get some Gulp Glow 4" Swimming Minnows and put them on a RED DOA 1/8 jighead in shallow water and 1/4 in deeper water. You can catch a lot of different fish. Including pinfish which wioll steal your bait. You can catch a pinfihs on a bream rod with a small hook and crappie jig or a piece of gulp, put him on a heavier rod with a cork about three feet above him and something will eat him.

How was the fishing at Alligator point?
