Went out late afternoon 6/27/07, launched from the lighthouse. It was only going to be a quick trip on the water; my mate head a slight neck injury, so we were planning to take it slow. Left the channel 200 yards south of the bird bar......Tide had fallen hard and was supposed to be coming back in. We anchored up another 500 yard south, southeast of the bird bar. Fished and chummed for about 2 hours catching small sharks, medium trout, and Huge Ladies. Caught a 4 inch blue, so i decided to place him under a float, and let him wiggle. He wiggled about 75 yards behind the boat for another 45minutes, then BAM, the line started screaming out, in about 20 seconds ( my mate reeled in his line, and was just about to free the anchor) and i was spooled......300 yards of braid, with 30 yards of backing gone. Tried to turn him twice with drag closed tight, but there was no stopping this freight train. We never put an eye on what it was............but an hour later we did see the float running fast across the surface (looked like mr. fish was chasing more bait!!) Fished for another hour and half and had the same pattern....trout, ladies, gaff tops, sharks. The real interesting part was as we were running in (going south, but real close, to the bird bar) scared a school of very large fish, 20 to 30 in a school. So we stopped on top of one school and sure enough TARPON.....some schools were 50-100, one school had five to six fish that were 100-150 pound class....and we saw one monster that had be 200 pounds or better!!!!!
