St. Marks Scalloping - 07-01-2007

Had the pleasure of bringing my oldest 2 to meet Andre and his family for some scalloping out of St. Marks.

We left Shields around 8:30. We quickly made our way down river and east to the flats. We stopped a few places to survey topside before settling at the first stop in 4 feet near black rock. Here we found some but had to work for them. My kids had a blast on their first trip.

We moved to a new spot further east and the scallops carpeted the bottom in 6 feet. Since the deeper water was a little more challenging, Andre and I cheated and strapped on tanks. My daughter was right next to me breathing off my 7 foot hose while I used my octopus. We picked up 5 gallons in a little less than an hour. Andre and his son had good luck as well.

With our limit secured we moved to some shallow rocks to look for a fish, and then clean our catch. I got a couple of sheeps and a mangrove and missed a nice grouper which cost me a lost spear in the grass.

Andre and I cleaned scallops for what seemed like an eternity. Luckily we hit our meat limit with some to spare, so back they went.

The kids had fun on the boat while we cleaned.

We stopped for a while at the sandbar and let the kids swim some more before making it back to Shields about 4.

My daughter wanted a pic holding a fish, so here she is...

My buddy and I just had the conversation this morning about scallop quotas. Tom you mention you had your limit at 5 gallons? Wouldn't it be 6 gallons? Just want to make sure I am reading the regulations correctly.

5 gallons on the second stop. Got a few more than a gallon on the first.

2 gallons whole per person or 10 gallons whole per boat, whichever is less.

We took the meat limit of 1/2 gallon per boat.
