Carabelle 7-15-07

Post by dolphinatic »

Met up with TK around 6:45am and headed off to Carabelle for what seemed to be a good day for offshore fishing. We arrived at the CBC promptly at 7:45am and the place was like a ghost town. Our boat was not in the water and our fishing partners were not to be seen. A few minutes later, another crew showed up to go fishing and their boat was nowhere to be found either  We thought that surely the place was not closed on a weekend day, especially when a call was placed the day before to have the boat in water early am. Well, finally a guy (whom we nicknamed Ummmm) shows up a little after 8:00am and starts moving things about. He finally gets to the boat and then promptly puts in on the fuel rack to gas it up.....since it was not done the day before as requested  Anyhow, we finally get it in the water and start our excursion around 8:40am

A quick stop by C-Quarters for ice and bait (squid, LY's and cigar minnows) and we are off.

We ran out to look for live bait, but to no avail

Image

We decided to run out to a buoy to look for live bait, but the only thing we could find was a cobia that didn't want to eat :x

We got to out first spot in 70 ft. about 30 minutes later and the bite was slow. I decided to slap on a Gulp Sardine and about 1 minute later, a nice red took the bait.......go figure.....a gulp

Image

We loaded up on live bait with the sabikis and decided to move on to another spot. Got there and it was slow too......and HOT!!!!!! Little breeze to speak of. Then the comment was made about our day being very similar to the one Rocket had the other day......no corncobs though

TK decided that we might want to try deeper water, so off we went to a spot in 95 ft. The bite turned out to be much better here, especially with live bait. All we could manage was red grouper and not the first gag or red snapper.....

TK and I put out a few live baits hoping for a king to pass by......TK got his wish and hauled in this nice beauty.......notice the expert gaff job done to head by yours truly

Image

Since we had our 4 man limit of red grouper and no other fish wanting to bite, we decided to call it a day. While retrieving the anchor, it fell off right in front of the boat...oops We (I) also manged to lose the bait net for the live well :x ......and the Nav Net was on the blink all day too. I guess if nothing else it helped this one stellar day on the water

Conditions were great all day....except for the HEAT!!!!!! Fished from 70-95 ft. with most fish coming on live bait and the gulp. Ended up with 4 red grouper from 20"-25" with a few keepers thrown back since we could only keep 1 a piece due to them being "endangered"

Made it back to the CBC around 5:30pm, cleaned the catch and headed back to Tally for a much needed shower. Can't wait to do it again......

By the way.....Thanks to TK for some of the king...here's out it turned out :lick:

That sucks about the boat club. I bet you were pizzed! If you saw a 23' Contender still in the water while you were waiting, that's my buddy's new boat.
We had to lay off the livies, couldn't get them past the sharks. Tried Gulp once...didn't work. Squid was the ticket believe it or not.
Glad yall caught some, dem eats look good :lick:
