Aucilla 7/19/07 - 40 inches of love

Old college roommate came in town and we fished with one of my high school buddies at the Aucilla.

High tide at 6:05 a.m. Fishing at 6:10 a.m in 2.5' of water. Five minutes in huge explosion on the topwater lure...three jumps...100+ lb. tarpon...strips out lots of line ...start the motor to chase, gain a little ground...three more headshaking jumps...and then the 10 lb. mono breaks after a nice little two minute fight. First time I'd ever hooked a tarpon. It was cool.

After a few "Holy @#@$" from the two friends, we're back fishing. Ten more minutes go by, sun is just starting to rise. Another mega-hit on the topwater lure, line starts screaming out...what could it be? After a 30 minute fight with several long runs, we net a 40" redfish...it was ginormous.

I could barely lift the thing in with the net...

After a few high fives, continue our drift and continue to catch fish...reds were all over the place...and most were in the slot. Caught a few trout, but caught 15-20 reds on the day. I even let my friends catch a couple too.

Beautiful!
And, at the risk of quoting myself from yesterday:

You Might Need To Fish ASAP...

I saw more action this morning than I have for a long, long, time.
My guess is that the nutrients from the late rains have finally worked up to "bigger" productivity nearshore. I was working & couldn't fish. Near cried. Big fish busting lots of bait everywhere I looked. Tarpon everywhere.
