Got to the ramp around 7:00, the water was high so we headed out with no worries. Tried around that island to the right for a red. Mullet were everywhere but no bites so we headed out for some trout. Fishing was tough, the bites were scattered and mostly shorts. Got on the radio hoping for the majic tip of the day. Talked to Big Blister he was doing about as well. I wound up with my limit (almost) 16",18.5",16.5",18",and a 15.25" that flopped out of my hands, off the measuring sticker, across the front deck, and into the water. Bob the builder could not buy a keeper today. We caught numerous shorts and tons of sea bass, lizard fish and something that looked like a juvenile grouper with aqua stripes. Brought home 4 trout and 3 seabass. Coming in at 1.1' of tide I had to come off plane because some fool was sitting right of the tripod. Idle forever to get past the mouth. Then run in from there and rattle rattle rattle. dang unmarked crab trap wrapped around the prop. Got it off and went on in. Just before the no wake the bottom was coming up fast So I let off and trimmed up at the same time. ERRGH not fast enough, kissed a rock! Finally got to the dock and realized no real damage. Just a little scraping on the skeg.

Sounds like a normal trip out of Econ to me.

I have a buddy that has a 19 ft Kenner with a 90 horse Mercury, with a jack plate..that lives down at Econfina..mostly. He says in going and coming out of the river...with tides like you had on this weekend...even on low tide....just pour on the coal...trim it high...and let'er go....mostly on the left of the tripod...going out. People anchored in the channel...by the tripod...does pose a problem though. Don't know the answer to that.

As for those that choose to anchor around the mouth...well,
we've had this discussion before.

I know the previous discussion was somewhat passionate and I don't wish to stir the pot, but it just occurred to me what one of the sources may be for different feelings regarding the approach to the river mouth. I know there are some folks who prefer a route to the left of the tripod. However, I would suspect that a good number of folks would believe the channel to be on the right (west) side going out. Someone wanting to fish the bar which extends from the East bank towards the West (at the mouth) could very easily set up in the area that another boater would consider the route they were entitled to. I'm not saying anything other than perhaps because of a situation unique to Econfina, we have the potential for some misunderstanding.

in the fall on a low tide with a good Saturday morning crowd!

Ahh, Icky. Definately got some rocks, gotta be careful on a low tide there. I wonder just how many junk traps have been left for boaters to run into? Lools like if a crabber don't want a junk trap he'd at least haul it over close to the bank and drop it off. I know we've hit our share of the sorry things. And why guys want to anchor in the channel I still don't understand. If I fish the mouth at all, I just drift past it pitching topwater and try not to get in the main channel.
