How "dry" is your flats rig?

Mine will get you wet. Flat bottom is ruff riding too. I have 21" gunnels but if the wind is right with a little chop and you get wet.
I like the shallow draft, and I can motor in skinny stuff in the creeks.

Does anyone have a newer carolina skiff? Didn't they improve the wet ride on those?

Is a flats boat just gonna get you wet no matter what the design?

Anytime you're running east-west with a strong south wind you will get some spray across your boat.

So I will compare past boats I have ran in these conditions.

Basstracker, a good ride and wet.

21 ft Carolina Skiff, a little bumpy with some spray. If you run agaist the wave you will get spray over the bow into you face.

My 18 ft Action Craft, one can get wet on this boat too. But it is by far the dryest boat I have ever owned.

While not a true "flats boat" in the sense of the word, I am amazed at how skinny my 186RG will go. Of course, I am not trying to go over oyster bars at 3" of water like some here. :o

As for dry. It is fine if you stay in less that 3 footers and do not have a stiff crosswind. It does take a little work with the speed and trim to smooth it out in the rough stuff....

I did get caught one time out about 15 miles with a buddy boat in some 4 to 5's(thunderstorm). Do not want to do that again, although I never felt unsafe, it WAS a rough, wet ride...I was more skeered of the lightning than the water.... :-?

I agree
Whenever there's stiff cross wind I get some spray, but it's usually worse on the passenger since I'm in the middle :-D

Also, From past experience one can get wet on a barge when the seas and wind direction are right.

sometimes it gets wet, but it's got to be pretty choppy.
