Put in at the Wakulla river bridge just west of New Port.
Go upstream about a quarter of a mile or so. Find a spot on the right side of the river deep enough to hold mullet.(best if you can already see schools)

Mix sinking fish food of laying mash with enough water to make it hold together. Toss in a tennis ball sized wad and watch the mullet feed.

On a cane pole 15' plus, tie a corked, sabiki type setup using number 6 or number 8 live bait hooks with a weight at the bottom.

Bait - use splitshot sized pieces of white fatback, no kidding, just enough to cover the barb. Place the baited rig in the bait cloud.

The mullet don't generally eat the fatback, but they will mouth it long enough to set the hook.

When the cork bobbles ---- SNATCH.

Once a fellow passing by us asked what we were using for bait. I told him sandspurs. I wouldn't recommend that.
Good Luck and let us know how you did.

I have a buddy that does it at Suwanee the only difference is he uses cheap white plastic worms and slices very thin pieces about the size of a single flake of oatmeal. Some use tiny bits of pond worms also good luck.

Spotty, Thank's a lot for the info. That kind of good stuff is hard to come by. I'd like to modify that plan to the fly rod. Fatback flies would be classic.

I know if you make a fly out of fat back you are no longer a true fly rod purist, but couldn't you tote your fly collection floating in a jug of Gulp juice?

:) Spotty, whatever you do ole buddy, don't tell the others about cutting up little slivers of white gulps and putting on those #6 live bait hooks on that sabiki type rig with the little fly rod cork on the 12ft bream buster. And by no means tell them the way we catch 'um up here on da Ocmulgee with the chum sacks staked out with rabbit pellets and hog pellets. Man if this got out we'd put more mullet fishermen out of business for sure. Remember to keep da gaff close at hand for them rare goliath mullet! :smt005
