OK, I am stumped, but it doesnt take much for that.

I am having a problem with my Briggs and Stratton 9 HP Go-Devil (Vanguard). Motor cranks fine, runs fine with the prop and shaft level, then when I lower it to "go," it cuts off. (This is when I am in the water or when I am not.)

It ran great all last duck season and has sat up (with Stabil) and I cranked it several times over the spring/summer and it ran fine. Of course I never lowered the motor on these "drydock" tests.

What could be wrong with it? (other than the fact that this motor used to belong to Rocket)

Nailed it.

Does it sputter or just shut off? Sputter is probably fuel, shuts off is probably a short "check the kill switch and wiring"

I could be wrong, but there might be a low oil shut off. Might want to check the oil level. I could be thinking about the motor I had before that one.

I had the same motor and that happend to mine also .Try cleaning the carb I belive something is in there gumming up the float.

It could have a low oil switch causing it. Also most of those motors have a mercury switch. Your mercury switch could have been moved to the wrong position causing it to stall in the down position.

I think that most of those Briggs motors have a low oil sender that shuts the motor off. I had one that was just under the oil level and thought that it was fine but that little bit made a difference. Check your oil level.

As usual my technical difficulties were of my own making. The low oil sensor that Rocket, JT and others diagnosed was it.

I had never known what the correct "angle" of motor was for checking the oil. A little oil and she runs like a top again. Imagine that?
