St. Marks 2007.10.05 - SPOOOON!!!

Ran out after work to fiddle with the boat a little more and try to squeeze in an hour or two of fishing.

Winds were 15-20mph gusting much higher - guy who sold me my boat is a dealer and threw in a danforth anchor off a 27' offshore boat he had in the lot cause mine didn't have one - it barely fits in the bow storage, which is the size of the entire bow, and itr's heavy, and it's on a heavy chain...I stuck it upside down and rammed it in to an oyster bar cause it was impossible to anchor anywhere else, and the wind blew my boat off anyway, fortunately with me in it..

Anyhoo, didn't get the boat in the water till about 6pm, there was a light rain and all that wind but what the hey, I was already there, so off I went. I tried topwater, but couldn't get anchored up anywhere, wind was pullin slack and in turn pulling the luire across the top so that was out. Tried soft-baits with the heaviest jig heads I had- no go....

So after all my talk about the spoon, I anchored up to an oyster bar and started slinging a spoon with the wind and slow-retrieving it. I only ended up getting in maybe 10 casts on the spoon cause the storm clouds covered up the sun and it got dark early, but on my 3rd cast, bang! redfish

Don't let the spoon fool you - that's a huge spoon - fish was 20" - got a few more casts after that and followed a large boat up the channel since it was just about too dark to see and they had radar :D

On another note, I probably found good news on the issues I was having with the boat running rough - all the symptoms were pointing to a misfiring or unpowered cylinder, low compression, other expensive things - popped the cover off this evening to check some fuel lines that go from carb to carb on the recommendation of an Evinrude mechanic, and found that the plug wire on the top cylinder was backed off between 1/4 and 1/2 inch, barely hanging on and almost certainly not making electrical contact...so that's back on now and we'll see how it works in the morning. :smt013
