As you leave Panacea going North, there is a road on the right that goes down to Porter Island [I think that's the name] at the end of the road there is a ramp and another a couple of hundred yards before the end on the left, when I was last over winter 2005 there were loads of boat trailers in the first car park ramp area also people waiting around a fire [ in an old oil drum] for I guess the boats to return, the cops were there also, I wondered if they were waiting for maybe shrimp boats or mullet to be landed?...............anyone got any ideas?...........just curious!
Also is this an area that may be good to launch from to fish the area?

That's the bottoms road landing. I know quite a few folks that fish out of that landing but its pretty shallow, be well aware of the tides if you launch there.

I also understand that there have been several trucks broken into...
It is an isolated ramp and I have never felt safe leaving my truck there.

That's a good kayak fishing spot. I have done well on the reds there. Never had a problem with my truck, but maybe I've been lucky. Here's a Bottoms Rd kayak red, and a low-tide sunset from the same evening. I caught five that evening while enjoying the peace and quiet with a fine cigar. Good Landing. I put in one time there. You do have to watch the tide. I wouldn't suggest going out on a falling tide, you might not be able to get back in.

The folks at the first spot on the left "not a boat ramp" are Mullet fishers, the Mullet run through there during the Winter and they get a lot of Roe Mullet also It was manned night and day before the net ban and a lot of the locals just don't want to let the tradition die I have probably fished from the ramp at the end of the road more than any others here and I have NEVER had anything bothered on my truck "I have put in at 1am with the party going strong there and not had any problems" I prefer the low tide launching on a high tide, you have to back half your truck into the water before the boat will float on a half low or low tide, you launch without wetting the truck tires "but then you have to know where the "channels" are "yes, plural" A great place ta fish, but can be scary the first time you see all the stuff out of the water at a Winter, North wind blowing, LOW tide

Good on the locals, my respect to them! Too many of our countryside traditions are also being smashed by various laws by the so called "Do Gooders" over here in the U.K.

When you say net ban, do you mean long nets, I assume cast netting is not banned?

The advice on launching at low tide when a high incoming tide is due, makes a lot of practical sense, not many high tides when I'm over though, With a North wind and low tide can it be fished by walking /wading the exposed ground, or is it too dangerous, I did this with some success from Bald Point, but had to keep one eye on the tide as it came in so as not to get cut off.

Cast netting and short "non gilling" nets are still allowed. You can bank fish on the low tides, the best spots for that is the area where the Mullet fishers are at and "if at the ramp" on the points to the left or right "both a decent stroll to get to". The only real danger is getting sucked down by the notorious Mud Monster it's been known to suck the shoes right off a fellers feet to never be seen again
