For those with 4 stroke motors

It seems carburetors are real finicky on these 4 strokes. I read about a tip that may help. Keep Stabil in your gas always. Also adding another auxilary fuel filter will help. I'll be doing that soon.
It's all about the gas.....and keeping the contamination clear.
My next outboard will be DI.

I've been running a four stroke for a few years now in the UK no problems what so ever, I'm wondering if the gas {petrol} you guys get over here is not of the same quality? if you are saying "contamination" is a problem? anyone else got any comments on this as if I should be putting additives into the fuel, then I would be interested to Know your views

Wadey if you are having no problems I wouldn't worry. I think the gas here is the problem partly because it doesn't take long to varnish up.
Also water in the gas will stump most carburatored motors. Stabil in the fuel will prevent a lot of problems coming from contamination (ie. water , grit)
I read where todays gas with the cleaners it contains will clean all the way to your tank. So whatever it was transported in, and held in before you filled up, grit and contamination can be mixed in with the gas. Then sucked right into yo motor.

I've got a 150 four stroke, but it is fuel injected and I have an external spin on filter. I do add PRI-G, which is a fuel additive and stabilizer and works well. I add it always and no problems for this first year of ownership. I don't know about "finicky". It starts first crank every time just like a car engine. No smoke, no oil to add, so quiet at idle you can't tell it is running.

sorry what I meant to say was that I have a 4 stroke engine over here and would you advise that I put an additive with the fuel, if so which brand name! it seems to be running perfect but to be honest I have only used it for around10 hours,

Right now my opinion of 4 strokes is biased. I'll just keep quiet.

I read it. But, which new FS engines still use a carborator? Pretty much every FS engine over 40 hp uses fuel injection. So, which engine are we talking about?

We would be talking any 4 strokes that have a carburetor, yamaha 40hp, or older motors.....

Any ideas as to what is causing a 4 stroker to have difficulties starting? I am having trouble with cold starts and starting after 30 minute+ runs. While running, it runs fine, strong. Once it gets warm, it will cut out and refuse to start until it cools. Water is pumping strong. Just got a new impeller and fluids changed.

I would think maybe a carb issue.

What year? I was having all kinds of problems with the motor "carbing up"...started by running rough. Fixed it with new thermostat and ringfree used religously.
