I've been thinking about fishing around the Dog Island Reef, just to see what was out there. Based upon my charts, Dog Island reef is about 7miles southeast of Lanark boat ramp or about 4 miles off the east tip of Dog Island. But it looks like coming out of Carrabelle would be a better bet than having to navigate around the Lanark Reef.

A couple of questions: What's the best course to plot going to Dog Island, straight SE out of Lanark or from Carrabelle. Second, is Dog Island Reef good fishing grounds or should I consider other options.

I've got seven days to plan out fishing float plans for, so any advice for around the Carrabelle/Apalach area would be most appreciated.

First, Dog Island Reef is just an area of shallow to mid depth grass bed that goes several miles between east end of Dog Island and Alligator Point. It can be an excellent spot for spanish mackerel, blues, cobia, tarpon, sharks, and trout. It drops of to 20' on the land side pretty quick.

Getting around Lanark Reef is no problem. You just have to head west out of the Lanark Ramp, go down a mile or so, and head south at the red buoy. There are two markers due south of the "turning buoy" that show the deepest water in the path. Just head due south between them. The guy at the ramp bait shop can give you directions, in any case. I prefer going that way rather than east, because you have to pick your way across the shoal and it can be hard.

Thanks for the info EddieJoe. Now if the good Lord will bless the week of May 4th with a high pressure system over the Big Bend maybe we can enjoy a full week of good fishing and calm seas.
