St. Marks 11/19 - Freelinin' for Grouper - Photo's added!

Post by Just Fish »

Well NOAA was just a bit off 1-2 was more like 3-5 in the morning but between 2-4 pm it slicked off nicely.

Headed directly south of the light house. With the waves 3-5 I felt like I was about to chum and it took a bit to get my sea legs back, but about 12 miles out, found some good looking bottom in 25' and started to troll. Red and white stretch 25 was picking up a few grouper although we only got 1 keeper on the red head. The blue green stretch was consistantly picking up nothing but lizard fish. Decided to switch it up and drift a bit. Using the bait we picked up from the bottom(don't know what they are called they look like pinfish golden in color but longer with big mouths and bluegreen stripes) we picked up 3 more keeper gags. And 15 keeper rock bass. We would have had at least 3-4 more gags if we had brought some larger hooks. #3 and #4 were just a bit small in my opinion and we lost some really nice ones.

Final tally for the day.

4 gags 24"-26"
15 rock bass

Will post pictures later when the cameraman emails them to me.

Oh almost forgot to mention, most of the gags we got where when we would freeline the bait weightless. Seemed strange to me but I wasn't gonna question what was working. Fishing the bottom got us in the rock bass and they just tore up the baits. The freelining worked great until about 2pm when the wind died down and the drifting came to a halt.

Next time I will drift in the morning with the wind and troll in the afternoon when it slicks off.

Good report. The small fish you used for bait was probably the sand perch, Diplectrum formosum. Grouper love them.
