Aucilla 12/22/07

Took my dad to the Aucilla this morning and arrived at the ramp around 10:30 to find that NOAA was full of crap about their weather predictions. The wind was whipping about 15 out of the NW and it was gray and cold. We were barely able to get the boat in the water and off we went. Weaved in and around the boat traffic in the river and went through the West Pass to fish around RFP. Idled all the way over to RFP and even got to test the new Wavel Porter Rock Guard...it worked great. Eased in to the point and started working the grassline, my dad throwing the TSS and me throwing a 1/16 oz jig head with a white grub. We had to use the trolling motor a bunch today staying close to the grass, but when we were able to stay close, we had the most success. We fished the shore line all the way down to within .5 miles of Gray Mare.
We caught 8 trout to 21", with our best five (21", 19.5", 19.5". 19" 18.75") weighing around 11.75 lbs, and also caught four redfish to 25", but only two kept. We left the fish biting at 2:30 p.m. The fish bit best in the last hour of the rise and the first hour of the fall. All of the fish were holding tight to the grass; none were caught further than 30' from the grassline. Most of the fish were holding in areas where there was a patch of grass 15-20' away from the shoreline grass (if that makes sense) and on grass points. All the fish were in less than 2' of water. Water temp was right at 57 on the flats. Hope this helps...keep 'em bent.
