Steven's First Deer

Our family spent the week between Christmas and New Years at Kim's parent's house in central Mississippi. We had a great time relaxing, visiting relatives, shooting fireworks, riding 4wheelers and spending time in the woods.

On January 2nd around 3pm Steven (9 1/2) and I (39 and holding) hit the woods for an afternoon deer hunt. We had already spent some time in the woods squirrel hunting but wanted to see if the deer were moving onto the food plots in the evening. We saw our first deer at 4:45pm but it was too far away for a safe shot. Steven and I were excited and hoped to see another deer or two come onto the field before it got too dark.

Around 5:15pm we had a spike buck enter the field from our right about 50 yards away. Steven felt that this was his chance for his first shot at a deer. We slowly opened the window and Steven looked at his deer through his scope. The window was closed because we had a propane space heater turned on because it was so cold. Steven had borrowed his cousin's Remington .243 youth rifle. Steven watched the deer for about 3-5 minutes and told me how confident we was that he had a good shot and was ready to shoot. Steven eased the safety off and made his final preparations for a shot.

I stood behind Steven and told him to take his time, take a calming deep breath and take your shot when your ready. Steven shot. The deer took one step and dropped. Steven jumped up and down with excitement. I congratulated him, gave him a hug and a high five. The excitement was high in our deer stand. After about 5-7 minutes we walked onto the field to see Steven's first deer up close.

Steven's grandfather met us about 5 minutes later and helped us load the deer onto the 4wheeler. Steven told Papa all about his experience and Papa took a picture or two of us. Steven helped us dress the deer and about an hour later we had meat in the fridge.

Steven's excitement still hasn't worn off. Here are some pic's.

Hope everyone had a great holiday break.
