You can spend $35 on a Okuma or $400 on a Tibor...the choice is yours

What's your price range?

Under a 100 bucks. I took apart a few different reels recently and it appears most at this price range have plastic components. Maybe just a coincidence but I also understand in saltwater gear you get what you pay for. Really I am putting my feelers out to see if anybody has something used or is there a decent cheap reel I can get that will get me to a point to upgrade.

FP,
If you can't find something used in your price range, the Pflueger Medalist reels are a great choice for the money. Then if you decide to upgrade, it'll work as a back-up.

Look for a Teton Tioga on ebay - they go for about $110.00 - $120.00. I don't have one but when I upgrade from my Medalist 1495, that's what I'll get. If you do go the Medalist route, look for an older US made Medalist on ebay - a 1495 or 1495 1/2DA or 1498. They should go about 25.00 to 45.00 depending on condition.

I think the reels being sold by Sage are pretty decent for $100. I haven't examined them thoroughly though.

That's what I use and I'm happy. It puts up with my abuse in the kayak.
Actually listening to what other people say is worth the effort.

Scientific Angler Saltwater Taper is a good middle of the road choice....I use the redfish taper, but want to get a full taper (longer). Reels are usually sized by weight i.e. 7-9. I did not see a value priced Sage reel for a 9 or 10 weight...largest was the 1680 and 1880, both rated at a 8 weight line. You can use it, but you would have to use less backing. I've only had 4 or 5 feet of my backing pulled off my reel once...unless your gonna target poons, you should be alright.

Thanks again. One last question with the line part. What do I match line to the rod or the reel? And should I use a weighted style line , slow sinking or tip weighted ?

Weight Forward Floating aka Floating - the head of the line which allows you to make a cast is the weight forward part aka "head"

I haven't found a need for a sinking tip yet, maybe when I chase some poons this Summer

all should match in weight, but some folks say you can "overline" a rod ( go up a weight) if the rod has a fast enough action to it. If it is a sure nuff 9/10wt. start with a 9wt line and see if you can "feel" the rod load up(feel the weight) on the backcast.
