These days I use 10# Power Pro tied directly to 20# flourocarbon and a split ring at the end of the leader. I rarely use swivels at all except for something like a spoon that I know is going to twist back and forth all crazy-like, and when I do, I attach the swivel between the ring on the spoon and the ring at the end of my leader.
I think that if you must use them, the best place to put them is dependant on lure selection. Putting a swivel at either end will affect weight and balance in different ways, so try it out each way with the lures you use and see what the difference is in action and feel, and see if it makes a difference in the bite.
Don't forget that with a floater or surface walker, the swivel in the middle can affect the angle of your leader to the lure even if it's not heavy enough to weigh the lure down. I tried to teach a friend to walk the dog with a Top Dog Jr. recently and he just couldn't get it right. Lure kept nose-diving under water every couple twitches just like mine do when the front hook is hung on the leader. I finally figured out that the swivel he had in the middle was causing the rod end of the leader to sink a little as the line slacked, so that when he twiched the line, the angle of the leader was pulling the nose under as the line tensed and the swivel moved toward the surface. I reckon the same thing could happen in reverse if you have a sinker or suspender that's intended to be twitched with a 'straight' or slightly upward pull.
On the other hand, if you're using a light soft bait / jerk bait that's supposed to emulate a 'dying fish' type action, then having the swivel up at the business end can weigh the nose down and cause it to not flip around properly, and angle of attack wouldn't be so important there because the thing is supposed to look random, so in that case the middle would be better most of the time I'd think.

Over here I tie braid direct to my fluro leader using a double uni-knot, there is no need for a swivel when using braid as line twist will not effect the braid and make it coil off the spool! at home when fishing for pike I have to use a wire trace so I use a swivel as a means of attaching the wire to the braid, if you are using mono main line to a fluro leader then you will need to attach a swivel to join the two in order to prevent line twist if using spoons, spinners etc.

Swivels add unnecessary weight, and more knots. Knots are the weakest link to your bait, swivels

My experiance has been different. I used to get world class line twist knots with braid, even with swivels, on things like a spoon. I actually found braid to be worse than mono in sensitivity to line twist, so much so, that I will now only use braid on rods set up for specific things - like running frogs thru lily padss.

35# Spro swivel don't leave home with out them...there are certain things that you can't do without them ...one is throw a spoon and efficiently cover ground and not have to change your line after every trip...sure you can fish a spoon with out twisting your line, but I will make three casts to your one...time is money and money is time...get’r done

you can get line knots with braid, usually because you are using a light lure to line dia. ratio, casting into the wind? but line twist IS NOT going to cause it FACT!.........Power Pro is the only braid I am happy with!

What Chalk said. I use the SPRO swivel also. The 35# swivel is their #10 swivel.
In 5 years of use I have yet to break one. It is tiny..tiny. Does not interfer with any lure.
