St. Marks 2008.01.12 Red Huntin'

Headed out this morning from the fort just before sunrise wiht Mojokoko in my boat (yes apparently I actually do own one!) to take it for a spin after an extended leave of repairs. Brought some shrimp and worked oyster bars on the incredibly low tides. No takers, not sure we even got any bites other than a stingray mojo caught over at the east river mouth. Boat worked fine, but still killer on gas, so after burning two tanks out in it, went back to the fort, took it out, went back to JBT and picked up Mojo's boat. Water was still pretty low so we fished the shrimp a little longer...still no takers.

Around 14:30 decided there might be enough water to get up some creeks and headed east. We shot up a random Stoney Bayou creek with the incoming tide, saw a few spots here and there holding good sized reds, but couldn't get them to bite anything. Did lots of chunk-n-wind, redfish magic, assorted soft baits, skitterwalks and various *-dog lures. The key was 4" newpenny Gulp! with a jig-head under a cajun thunder at the lighthouse. They were very spooky today. They were generally just gettin the heck out of dodge when the lures got near them. Fished the creek mouths on the outgoing and again saw a few fish that wouldn't bite. Barely got out of the last creek before it got too shallow, and just made it back to the fort before it got too dark to see channel markers.

Water temps varied wideley throughout the day, frm a low of 60 in the morning around the St Marks River mouth, 65 around East River, 60-65 on the east flats, and as high as 76 up the creeks. Caught my only fish in water about 72 degrees and 12-18 inches deep.

Finished the day with just 1 fish, and no keepers
