Back the drag way off and give it a good rinsing with fresh water and make sure to go over the rod.
Suber has a post on here about the subject as well.

Not trying to contradict what you're saying, RC, but it was very interesting that I exchanged a defective reel last year when the Shimano road show was in town. The Shimano rep asked how I washed my reels after saltwater use. I told him almost exactly what you said. He said to tighten the drag all the way before rinsing the reels. It helps keep water out of the drag system. Back the drag off after washing.

Mist lightly, wipe down, Spray Reel Magic in Drain holes and let dry....About my fourth outing I deep six the reels in warm soapy water, open them (Remove Spool) and let dry...Sometimes I spray them with Reel magic, clean and oil the bearings...sometimes I have to do this
A reel formerly known as Shimano Curado 200

What about totally dunking a reel in the ocean? Am I in for spending an evening on the operating table like on Chalk's reply? I've been there and it sucks

I was just doing a normal cleaning TT

....you can soak it in warm water, remove the bearings and clean them...spray some reel magic on the reel, reinstall the bearings and you should be okay...only takes about an hour to clean one though...I did four today

Rods & Reels
Wash mitt - boat soap... give em' a good rub. Spray em' off. Chamy dry. If I am putting my personal rods into storage for any length of time back I the drags down & put them into freespool.

I put them in the shower and let it roll about 1/2 hour or so and drip dry.
So for so good.
I never spray at the car wash it pushes the salt where it don't belong.
