Last Hooray for Quack Season

After two weeks of miserable hunting, loaded the truck for another traveling duck show. Hit the pond with a bud and old Trashy. Had mallards or mottles (too dark to tell) hovering over the deks just before shooting time. Thought we could light them for a legal time salvo, but with a couple of minutes to go, something spooked them and they moved off. Teal were moving early too. When legal time came, had a group of blue wings work us and 2 birds hit the water. Picked up one, but couldn't find the other. Then a mottle comes in and commits in front of my bud. Splash one. Things slowed down for a while with a few teal slipping in. Had some tree ducks work us, but didn't like us. I went out and turned the mojo off. Didn't seem to make any difference. Birds would seem to work the edge of our hole, see the decoys and decide to leave. Many didn't get away. Trashy had what we thought was a mottle try to jump on him. He put it in the water. Turned out to be a hybrid. Just a whisp of white on the speculum. Another big duck swings in and Trashy splashed it. I thought it was a grey duck, the biologist said it was a hen pintail. Had a group of 50 teal slip in. Trashy and my bud Tom froze, I managed to knock one out of the crowd as they started their climb for altitude. When it was all said and done, we had knocked down 18 birds and picked up 12. We competed with two nearby pods of coots. Celebrated with lunch of Carrabes Grill. A group of 6 guys in camo. We were the center of attention '-) Although I had a terrible head cold, we all had a great time and a super end to a so so season. Had every intention of hunting for a can this year, but just didn't find the time. Oh well, time to pack the gear away for another year.
I also finished my new flood and drain pond at the farm other than installing the water control devices. Gonna see if I can get some quality shooting close to home next year.
Guess its time to start sharpening some hooks
