Man what a sow. :o If he had held her up with a Boga grip it would have given him that extra inch he needed to be in the dirty 30 club. Just kidding.

Ok, folks, we can't let a kayaker catch the ellusive 30" trout here in the big bend! Let's get to it.

Found this when I googled his name...

29.5" and 8 lbs. 12 oz speckled trout caught in the Elizabeth River, VA.

The story as told by the angler, Wayne Bradby of Chesapeake, VA:

I know others may have a few of these, but I finally managed my first citation.

Went solo to the ditch late Saturday. Put in around 5, hoping to avoid the crush of daytime boats. Plan was to fish a couple of hours and then head over to HRBT to join other members for some C&R stripers. Was planning on checking out two new areas, but first had to check my trusty cove to see if anything was happening. Pulled in...good news...only 4 boats working the shore, so pulled into my fav area and started throwing the reliable TKAA special on red jig head. Nothing happening for about 30 casts so switch over to a Sebile hard plastic. Wind know after about 10 casts, so back to the jig. Decided on a few more casts and then planning to go searching. Sometimes it just goes like this....4th cast and something hits. Didn't fight real hard initially (was on a Shimano 2500) probably because it was coming straight at me. Must have seen the boat cause when it did, the fight was on. Knew it was decent size then, but didn't want to horse it. Finally got it up and just saw the head...it was so large, I thought it was a big red. (it was totally dark by this time) Then it turned and I saw the spots and that's when it got interesting. It took another deep run and I'm freakin' out now cause I know it's a speck and was just afraid I was going to lose it. Got him up again and grabbed my net. That presented a problem cause my net is probably somewhere around 18" across and it was quickly apparent he wasn't going to fit inside. I was so worried about losing tension (and losing the fish). With my rod hand way up in the air and the other with this now dinky net, I kept stabbing at him to at least get his head in the net. Tried about 6 times and just knew I was going to lose him. Finally, success as a got just part of him in the net and brought him in. Paddled to shore (to insure I didn't lose him) and to take pics. Did try to revive him but when he stayed belly up for 20 minutes, decided to bring home.

The hot Ditch is a run off from a power plant, but the actual place they are fishing is a lagoon off the Elizabeth River and it looks liek a big pond. Many go over there and soak a cut mullet for hours to catch trout in the 30-36" range. They generally catch one every eight hours. Not much fun since its usually in the 30's when they catch them.
