What's the recommended line to leader connection? I use a nail knot for my 4wt freshwater rig but would that be strong enough for redfish/trout 8wt?

yep. the nail knot I think will do fine but, you might want to try a loop to loop connection that makes changing out broken/short leaders easier/faster out on the water.

I nail knot about a 10" section of 40 to 50lb test to the fly line with a loop knot on the other end to connect the leader to. I've never had one fail as of yet.

This sounds like the way to go - Which loop knot do you use?

I make a loop on the end of the running line by doubling it over and then tying a couple of nail knots around it with mono. Coat the nail knots with epoxy if you're worried about them possibly coming undone. Then tie a perfection loop on the butt of your leader and connect loop to loop.

I do the same thing. I use a perfection end loop for the loop to loop connection between the butt and the leader.

Extra epoxy in your case, I've seen those nail knots of yours...

I use about a 6-8 inch length of Hard Mason and use a nail knot to fly line to hard mason, tie a perfection loop in the hard mason, and then use a perfection loop (if there is not already a loop in the leader) in the leader.
As noleflyfisher said, a loop to loop connection. That way you can change out a leader fast if needed.
