Need some help the steering on my boat is frozen. will not move either direction. Is there any way to free it up.

thanks for the info. found a bigger hammer. Removed the slide and cleaned the inside of the tube real good then greased it. Worked fine all weekend.

WHAT'S WITH ALL OF THESE STEERING CABLES FREEZING UP, AFTER READIING THIS POST I WENT DOWN INTO THE GARAGE AND TRIED TO TURN MY STEERING AND IT WAS FROZEN UP . AFTER REMOVING THE 3 1/2 KICKER OFF SO I COULD GET TO THE 85, I RAPPED IT GOOD WITH A WOODEN MALLET. DID THIS FOR ABOUT AN HOUR AND FINALLY GOT IT TO BUDGE ABOUT 1/4 INCH. I DISCONNECTED THE CABLE AND PULLED IT AS HARD AS I COULD AND NOTHING HAPPENED. GOT DOWN MY (BLASTER FLUID) AND LOADED IT DOWN WITH THE LIQUID. WENT UP STAIRS TO THE KITCHEN AND HAD A COUPLE OF CINAMON ROLLS AND COFFEE AND RETURNED TO BEAT ON THE CABLE WITH THE MALLET AGAIN AND SHE BEGAN TO MOVE A LITTLE. I REPEATED THIS PROCESS SEVERAL TIMES AND FINALLY GOT THE CABLE OUT OF THE HOUSING. HUNG THE CABLE HOUSING UP IN THE GARAGE AND SPRAYED INSIDE WITH CHAIN SAW LUBE WHILE RUNNIN THE CABLE BACK AND FORTH IN THE HOUSING WITH DRILL MOTOR RUNNING VERY SLOWLY. GOT ALL KIND OF SLUDGE OUT OF THE HOUSING. RELUBED THE HOUSING AND WIPED THE CABLE IN S T P OIL TREATMENT AND PUT BACK TOGETHER. NOW SHE WORKS LIKE IT SHOULD. HOPE THIS WILL HELP SOME OF YOU FELLAS WHO ARE STILL HAVING STEERING PROBLEMS.

Thats the key.....or hydraulic steering.

Just got in from working on my steering too. My boat is 33 years old and has never had a steering problem. I haven't had it in the water in 7 months, but up until a year ago, it had been in the garage under a cover for 13 years I had to do some work on the tilt/trim and noticed the steering was completely seized. A half a can of WD-40 and a few whacks on the steerig rod with a hammer "got r done" Now, she's slick as snot and ready for Keaton thanks to some help from my little partner

I bought the K-5 back in '97 from the original owner (an old guy that lived in Stone Mountain, Ga). It was all original when I bought it. Since then, it has had 2 lifts, a set of wheels, 2 different sizes of tires, removed the running boards and ran 3" duals from the manifolds. Not to mention 2 transmissions and a transfer case....working on #3 right now Oh yeah, I also replaced the stock 350 engine 2 years ago with an ATK 350 w/ an aluminum intake. That's about it.
